NEWSARAMA Features SKYWARD In Its Best Shots!

    Skyward #1
    Written by Jeremy Dale
Art by Jeremy Dale, Steve Downer
    Lettering by Thom Zahler
    Review by Amanda McDonald

Upon seeing the cover for this creator published book from G.I. Joe artist alum Jeremy Dale, I thought "oh how cute, a boy and his dog book." Well, I guess one could describe it that way, but it was only a matter of pages before I realized this book has a lot more meat to it and a great potential to develop into a well executed coming of age tale for main character Quinn.

This book starts out sweetly enough, with young Quinn out fishing with his extremely large and burly father, Corin, and their dog, Jack. Dad is physically a caricature of the manly man, to the point that he evokes thoughts of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. However, the similarities are only on the surface level, as Dale efficiently develops this character as a caring father and devoted husband. As the story progresses, readers learn that Dad has a history and his nemesis arrives for a visit. Herod is villainous and flanked by slog riders that proceed to do a great amount of his dirty work. Through this heartbreaking and fast paced series of events, the young boy ends up on his own with only his dog and a mysterious sword.

The art in this book is solid. Dale creates expressive characters and each panel is consistently detailed. The level of work the creator has put into this story is evident merely in the well developed plot and character exposition, but seeing the level of visual talent he adds to the book really pulls this book together into something that is truly an enjoyable read. The style has a animation sort of look that appeals to young readers, and while the book has some violence — it's necessary to the story and not shown graphically.

If you've got young readers around, you may want to share this with them — but only after you've read it yourself, because it's just that good. This serves well as a first issue and tells just enough story to show that there's a great tale on the way, and I look forward to seeing where it goes next, in hopes that it continues to showcase creator Jeremy Dale's talents. Skyward is currently available via Dale's web site and at convention appearances, but well deserving of a spot on your LCS's shelves.

SKRATCHADAY 048: Gatecrasher! [link]
Please tell me I'm not the only one that remembers this classic series from the late 90s/turn of the millenium. Black Bull Entertainment? Owned by Wizard? Drawn by Amanda Conner and written by Mark Waid? Absolutely the funniest comic book on the stands? Anybody?

Well, screw you guys. Gatecrasher was AMAZING. It was even optioned as a show on MTV, but they ended up doing that Spider-Man CGI thing instead (true story). It involved a high school/college-aged guy who could open portals to other dimensions, but often accidentally. The military enlists him to their side, and they fight off alien invasions… all the while the hero struggles to keep his girlfriend from dumping him. Really, it was great. Check it out. SEEK it out. You'll thank me for it.

Google it for a look at the teaser they made up for MTV, too– looked like fun!

SKRATCHADAY 049: Avengers Assemble! [link]
I'm the guy that, even as a kid, would tell you the Avengers could kick the JLA's butts any day… and meant it. I was raised on the Marvel Universe, and really dug the Avengers from the get-go. Thanks to my father being a huge comic geek himself, I was lucky enough to read from issue 4 onward, even at the early age of 5 in the 1980s. I couldn't get enough! Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Wasp & Hank Pym– it was a fun team dynamic, and brilliant creators like John Buscema, Roy Thomas, John Byrne, George Perez on 3 or four runs (my favorite being his with Kurt Busiek), and so many more made the Avengers mythos tons of fun. Even now with the radically different team with Spidey, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, and Ronin as newer members make it always interesting and fascinating to see change and grow.
____________________________

SKRATCHADAY 050: The NEW FF Reed Richards! [link]
Time to bust out the new designs for the FF! I like the uniforms, but I dunno– it's not really Fantastic Four, is it? I suppose that's the point– I'm cool with it. It's got a Mass Effect flair to it, and that's kinda cool. I figured I'd draw the new FF as we currently know them (I'm still holding out that Spidey is a temporary member in a rotating position, allowing other character to come in and have FF-centric redesigns– it makes sense for action figure sales and video game alternate skins).
____________________________
SKRATCHADAY 051: THE NEW FF Invisible Woman! [link]
Okay, so bear with me here… I'm about to rant. I've never SEEN a more needlessly complicated and out-of-character design than this one recently. It's as if the designer couldn't figure out how to individualize the design beyond the template uniform he had built up with the logo, so he added lines here and there just to fill space. Not a fan.

Not to mention that without color? THIS LOOKS A LOT LIKE THE SUE RICHARDS OUTFIT DURING HER "90s Lookit Me I'm Dressed as a Prostitute" uniform. Don't believe me?

Check out  [link]!

So glad to be reminded of THAT monstrosity again. :/

I don't get bitter or dish the haterade often, but here's one I just don't get. The uniform in the sketch is ridiculous and poorly designed– starts with a solid basis and turns into Photoshop Design 101. Ick.
